DEVIN'S STORY: "I am grateful for the stability Ignite has given me."
In the heart of Chicago Heights, a small suburban town south of Chicago, a remarkable journey unfolds. Devin Burks Jr., the eldest of six, has navigated a challenging path that has led him to the doors of Ignite’s Belfort House. Since joining Ignite in June 2023, Devin has transformed his life, proving that resilience and determination can triumph over adversity.
Devin’s early life was marked by instability. Starting at just 16 years old, he faced the harsh realities of being unstably housed. The weight of uncertainty loomed over him, making it difficult to focus on his dreams. Despite battling crippling ADHD and anxiety, Devin harbored a passion for performance that inspired him through dark times. He thrived in sports, musicals, and public speaking, but the challenges he faced in school often made it hard for him to showcase his true potential.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic turned his world upside down. Dreams of performing on stage and becoming a prominent actor felt shattered as depression took hold. Yet, with the unwavering support of dedicated teachers and friends, Devin not only persevered but excelled. He graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA, served as philanthropy chair for the National Honor Society, and balanced two jobs—all while experiencing homelessness.
After high school, the struggle continued. Moving from place to place made it challenging for Devin to regain his footing. The advice from friends to enter the coordinated entry system opened a door to hope. It was a turning point that led him to Ignite and a more stable living situation.
At Ignite’s Belfort House, Devin found the peace of mind he desperately needed. With the support of a committed case manager and a network of resources, he began to focus on his future. The staff provided him with job opportunities, medical care, and essential life skills like budgeting and money management. With their guidance, Devin enrolled at Columbia College Chicago, embarking on a new chapter of his education and career.
Devin speaks fondly of the staff at Ignite, recognizing their dedication to helping clients like him succeed. He appreciates the community he has built with fellow clients, who offer support and understanding during tough times. “I am grateful for the stability Ignite has given me,” he says. “Without this program, I wouldn’t be weeks away from securing permanent housing or have the employment opportunities that have come my way.”
Reflecting on his journey, Devin recognizes the broader impact of organizations like Ignite. He believes that if more young people had access to the resources and support he received, we could see a significant reduction in youth homelessness across Chicago. “We can truly impact lives in a way that propels young adults into prosperous careers,” he asserts.
With a heart full of gratitude, Devin calls upon the community to become advocates for youth enrichment. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, support, and hope. Together, we can create pathways for young individuals to thrive and transform their lives. Devin’s journey is just one of many, reminding us of the profound difference we can make when we uplift one another.
