Ignite Icons Series - Third Ward Alderman Pat Dowell
To celebrate our 45th anniversary, we're bringing you the Ignite Icons series - highlighting some of the most prominent figures that have been part of the Ignite community over the years.
As we celebrate Black History Month, we’re highlighting 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell, who has long been a crucial part of Ignite’s work in Bronzeville and beyond.
She is a veteran of City Hall, an ex-city planner and deputy commissioner of neighborhood planning who worked under three mayors — Harold Washington, Eugene Sawyer and Richard M. Daley. Read on to hear more about her passion for the youth we serve, why she's passionate about the work we do, and what she sees for the future.
In your experience as Alderman of the 3rd Ward, and your experience with the organization, what impact have you seen Ignite have on the community, and on youth in the community in particular?
Ignite has served as a safe haven for young people who need the support they are not receiving from family or friends.
How have you seen Bronzeville and the neighboring areas change over the years?
The population is increasing and the community's social infrastructure is growing stronger. More public and private investment is being made in Bronzeville, resulting in housing and commercial development and other amenities.
What are some of the ways you’ve been involved with the organization over the years? (i.e. attending specific events, donations, exc.)
As Alderman, I have supported funding requests through the City Council and I have made personal donations from time to time to support the organization. I have also attended some events.
Finally, what are some of your hopes for the youth we work with?
My hope for the youth is that they will utilize all of the resources that Ignite provides to move out of what may seem to be a challenging or difficult situation. Self actualization is the goal.
